Bubbly Callie Derbyshire loves her job as a carer, and can't believe she's finally landed herself a decent boyfriend - older man Tony - who's lasted way longer than the usual disastrous three months. Tony's exactly what she's always dreamed of ... or at least he would be if he ever took her out instead of just taking her to bed. And work would be perfect too if she wasn't constantly in trouble with her boss, The She-Devil Denise.
When the new gardener, Mikey, discovers her in a rather compromising position at work, Callie knows that her days at Bay View Care Home could be numbered. Can she trust him not to tell Denise? If she's issued with her marching orders, who'll look out for her favourite client, Ruby, whose grandson, Rhys, seems to constantly let her down? What does Ruby know about Tony? And what is Denise hiding?
Surrounded by secrets and lies, is there anyone left who Callie can trust?

What a sweet, charming, and enjoyable read about finding love and discovering who you are yourself….this is Callie’s story! If you are like me, you will love the story she has to share with you.
Callie has dated her fair share of men, usually quite older than her. She is still trying to find her prince, and she has dealt with her fair share of “frogs, toads, and snakes.” She thinks she has finally found her Prince Charming in Tony. She has dated him for close to a year, an all-time record for her. However, she is noticing that he doesn’t take her out on dates. He is never romantic, and he is gone a lot. She may find out that he is the biggest snake of all, and her true love may well be right around the corner even if he is around her own age!
When Mikey discovers Callie and Tony in a not so great position at her place of employment, she isn’t sure she can trust him, especially when she discovers he is the new gardener. What she soon finds after getting to know him is that he may be the only person she can trust.
Callie is a great character. She isn’t perfect, but that is what makes her so wonderful. She is loving, trustworthy, loyal, and she doesn’t make judgements about others. She is very compassionate, even with those who don’t always deserve it. Her personality just jumps off the pages. I loved the addition of the secondary characters, especially Ruby. I think she deserves her own book. Oh, the stories she could tell us!!!!
This is a novella, but Redland left nothing out…her timing and pacing were spot on! If you have a couple of hours to spare and want a great pick me up, I highly suggest spending the afternoon with Callie!

What a wonderful introduction to Whitsborough Bay! Raving About Rhys is a cosy prequel to the Welcome to Whitsborough Bay series and hits all the love buttons.
Callie thinks that growing up without a Dad, makes her seek out older men as partners. She likes the confidence, maturity and experience they come with and feels more comfortable with that type of guy, than anyone her own age. Her current beau seems to be perfect but looks can be deceiving. Callie is about to discover that an incredible lot lies beneath the surface of those all around her…
Callie is super likeable. She’s spunky, caring, funny and looking for love. She doesn’t always make the best decisions but that just makes her more real. I felt quite invested in her search for happiness.
Ruby is an absolute darling. She’s Callie’s favourite patient at the Bay View Care Home and has quite a colourful past! Her antics and opinions are amusing and her shrewdness helps Callie in more ways that she would expect.
Whitsborough Bay is a gorgeous setting. The beach, the sun, the community all combine to create a cosy yet enchanting environment well-suited to happily ever afters.
The pacing of this novella is spot on. The reader is never left bored yet the action moves slowly enough for some quality character development. Each page and event moved the story along nicely.
Favourite new word
Lairy (British Informal) for cunning or conceited; flashy; aggressive or rowdy.
“It’s so romantic, or it would be with someone special and not a load of lairy, drunk lads.”
If you’re looking for a quick, light love story, give this one a try.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book through Rachel’s Random Resources.
Raving about Rhys is a novella of only 121 pages and the prequel to the Welcome to Whitsborough Bay series of books by Jessica Redland. Here we meet bubbly Callie Derbyshire. She loves her job as a care-worker at an old people’s home, she also loves her older boyfriend Tony, who constantly lets her down and his idea of a good night is taking Callie to bed and then going home to his own flat.
At the care-home, Callie has a favourite resident called Ruby. Ruby is like an older mentor to Callie, always giving her great advice. She is also always raving about her Grandson Rhys, who Callie has never met, and never turns up to visit Ruby when he is supposed to. Callie starts to doubt whether Rhys actually exists, especially when it turns out that Ruby never had any children.
The book is a very quick, sweet read. The characters are well developed and I just adored Ruby. The older generation always know so much that us younger ones don’t (not that I’m that young either!!).
The plot is quite predictable, yet thoroughly enjoyable. It is totally heart-warming and although it is only a short read, Ms. Redland certainly packed a lot into her story and has pure emotions running through it too.
I now can’t wait to read ‘Searching for Steven’, book one in the Welcome to Whitsborough Bay series.
