When Cole breaks into a winery in the middle of Napa Valley, he’s pretty sure he’s only there to drink himself to death. After all, a virus has wiped out most of the population and turned them into zombies, and he doesn’t really feel like he has anything left to live for.
Alessa retreated to her family’s winery hoping to find comfort. Every good memory she’s ever had started there, and even though her entire family is now gone, she knows that she’ll have to hold onto the strength they’ve always given her if she’s going to survive.
After a rocky start the two find themselves trying to move forward and welcoming other survivors into the winery so they can work together to build a future. But as the chemistry between Cole and Alessa heats up, an unexpected twist is thrown their way, forcing them to fight the odds and find each other once again.

Playing the Odds A Zombie Apocalypse Love Story Book 3 eBook Kate L Mary Reviews
This short story sucked me in right away, it's amazing how fast you can come to know these characters like you've known them forever. Even though you've only been with them for a few short pages. I love finding a book where your heart races, and you get scared right along with the character.
I think these books just continue to get better, and surpass my expectations with each one! Cole and Aleesha have a perfect story to be told, about not only coming to terms with a new world but also the depravity of humankind in such instances.
I’m currently devouring the entire zombie apocalypse series and I have to say that Playing the Odds is my favorite so far. I really enjoyed Cole and Alessa. Both characters were real and relatable. Kate Mary does an excellent job packing so much content into such few pages. I am so impressed with her characters.
This book is just what I have been looking for!! A novella that I can sit down and read rather quickly. I’m sooooo into zombies and while a lot of the books I read have a romance in the background, this book has it right out front and I found that to be rather refreshing…zombies and romance, and nice light reading. I had been avoiding this series, specifically because it said LOVE STORY in the description…but Cole and Alessa were very captivating characters. It’s 134 pages of relaxing reading…
Inwas super excited to continue the journey that this author wanted us to embark on. Both books I've read so far have been so different from each other but not less entertaining then the last. I didn't read the description of this one because I'm already hooked on what the author has written.
Cole was bada$$! Simply put, he didn't take crap but was also very protective and had amazing instincts.
Alessa was tough but I think too friendly. I'm assuming that's how she was before the zombies came out to play it in this world it can be dangerous. I still really liked her quick wit and how she didn't back down.
This one took place at a winery!!! How awesome is that! Each book take place in different locations and seeing their fight to survive was amazing and unique in each of the places.
Love when books are in Duel POV, and it made this one so much more enjoyable! I loved being able to be in Coles head. Each character in this series is so different. They each have a unique past that you can't help but want to know.
This book was pretty much the same end of the world zombie plot, but it has a different tone to it. There is a bigger group and more things to be cautious of. I loved Antonios (heroines cousin) character. He was protective and funny.
Overall, this was another great addition. I may have said it before, but I really love how the author makes each of these books different from the last. I don't feel like I'm reading the same plot each time even though they all take place in the same world. It's makes me want to read a dozen of them in one sitting! 4.5 stars #2OCCJD
The third in the zombie apoc love story novella series, this takes place three weeks after the virus has reached California.
Cole is (was) a professional poker player who breaks into a winery in the Napa Valley, which happens to be already occupied by Alessa, who happens to be totally hot and the only survivor of her Italian vintner family, aside from Antonio, her over-protective, football playing cousin who is built like a brick s**t-house and resents Cole's interest in Alessa.
Enter zombies, and several waifs and strays who are invited to join them at the vineyard, including dodgy Daren, who Cole is suspicious of from the word 'go'.
Kate Mary's characterisation is always spot on. This is told from alternating points of view of Cole and Alessa, and I like the way she made Alessa's attraction to Cole sexually orientated but romantic, whereas Cole was initially just doing the sexual bit; she never falls into the trap of writing men out of the head of a woman. There's more pulsating desire and rampant pheromones and less post apoc survival in this novella than in the first one of this series ('More than Survival', which I loved), but it's still a well-told story, and I enjoyed it.
Two other points I liked; firstly, the grapes and dice graphics at the beginning of each chapter. Also, there are instances of spoken Italian in this. The author's note says that she did this by internet translation as she doesn't speak it or know anyone who could help her with it, so apologises if she has made any errors. I wouldn't have a clue if she has or not, but I thought this was a nice touch. Like, "I did my best, and if there are errors, so be it, but please don't complain; you have been warned."
I love this author . Always a twist in the plot. Check her website for great deals on her Brkoken World and Twisted World series. Short stories are also great.
I thouroughly enjoyed this book. I couldn’t put it down. Kate is so creative with her writing and she’s only gotten better. Definitely can’t wait for the fourth book.
